Pricing for the new electric Tavascan crossover has been announced in the UK, as the Australian release of Cupra's most expensive model to date inches closer.
Final pricing and details are yet to be finalised for Australia, but in the UK, the Tavascan will start at £47,340 ($91,109) for the entry-level spec, rising to £55,935 ($108,811) for the mid-range VZ1 and then finally to £60,835 ($118,341) for the top-spec VZ2.
Those are steep prices when converted but CarsGuide understands the Tavascan is likely to start closer to $70,000 in Australia. It will need to if it's to succeed against the Polestar 2, Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E.
Currently, the most expensive Cupra model in Australia – the Formentor VZx SUV – is priced at $70,790 (drive-away).
For reference, the direct conversion of Cupra's Born electric car sees it cost a full $10,000 more in the UK than it does in Australia. Given the Tavascan is built for Australia in China, lower shipping costs than EU-delivered vehicles should provide a further advantage.
The Tavascan will be available with the choice of a single-motor rear-wheel drive powertrain (210kW/545Nm) or a performance-focused twin-motor all-wheel drive powertrain developing 250kW. The latter is likely to get closer to $90,000 once optioned up.
Full Tavascan performance figures are yet to be confirmed, but we do know the entry-level variant will deliver 566km in WLTP range from a 77kWh battery that can be fast-charged at up to 135kW.

The Spanish-designed SUV is only mildly different from its concept that was released back in 2019, retaining the same angular front end, large grille, three-triangle light signatures and curved roofline.
It adds Cupra's signature copper-like trims to the vehicle's logo, front bumper and wheels, while also extending to the vehicle's interior on the doors and dashboard.
Inside, the Tavascan is a step-up in luxury from Cupra's current flagship models, the Born and Formentor, packing a huge 15-inch multimedia system, a Sennheiser speaker system, ambient lighting and bucket seats clad in premium materials.

The premium price for the VW-owned brand, which is the sporty wing of Spanish automaker Seat, is a part of Cupra's strategy to differentiate itself from Skoda and Volkswagen. Cupra has several more punchy offerings in the pipeline, such as the Raval small hatch and possibly a production version of the Dark Rebel sports car concept.
The Spanish automaker is looking to increase its sales in the Australian market with the Tavascan. Having a small line-up in the process of renewal, the brand's 1273 sales so far this year put it 29.6 per cent down on its position in 2023.
Full domestic details on the Tavascan aren't far away with Tavascan due in Australia by December, potentially beating Volkswagen's related ID.4 and Skoda's larger Enyaq to market.
