Volkswagen Group will front its Tesla Model Y rival – the Cupra Tavascan – with a price tag of $60,990, before on-road costs, when it lands in Australia this April.

The electric coupe SUV, which is already on sale in Europe, was previously floated with a sub $65,000 price tag but it will now undercut the new Tesla Model Y, which starts at $63,400, before on-road costs.

It isn’t too far out of reach of more budget-friendly competitors either, such as the Kia EV5 ($56,770), BYD Sealion 7 ($54,990) and XPeng G6 ($54,800), all of which are priced at before on-road costs.

Cupra has confirmed the Tavascan will be offered in two variants in Australia, the entry-level Endurance and the top-spec VZ, which sees prices rise to $74,490, before on-road costs.

Underpinning both variants is a 77kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which delivers a claimed 534km of range on the Endurance. It pairs the unit to a single electric motor mounted to the rear axle, which delivers 210kW/545Nm.

The VZ adds an additional 80kW electric motor on the front-axle for a total power and torque output of 250kW/675Nm. Zero to 100km/h acceleration falls from 6.8 seconds to 5.5 seconds in the process, but so too does range, which is a claimed 499km.

In terms of standard equipment, the Endurance carries a 15-inch multimedia touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 5.3-inch digital driver’s display, wireless phone charging and three-zone climate controls.

Additionally, there are 19-inch alloys in Cupra’s signature Black and Vulcano Silver styling, a new LED headlight design with triangular day-time running lights, illuminated front and rear Cupra badges and a power tailgate with hands-free functionality.

Customers can upgrade to the Interior Package for an additional $4500, which comes mostly standard on the VZ. It includes 20-inch alloys, a surround-view camera, microfibre front seats with power, heating and memory functions, ambient lighting and a 12-speaker Sennheiser audio system.

The VZ adds a panoramic glass roof with an electric sunshade, larger 21-inch wheels, matrix LED headlights and adaptive high beams.

From mid-2025, customers will be able to also opt for the $8000 Extreme package, which adds Nappa leather upholstery, performance tyres, bucket front racing seats and 21-inch performance alloy wheels.

White Silver or Atacama Desert Paint is a no-cost option on both variants, while Tavascan Blue or Basalt Grey can be equipped for $800.

Standard safety assist systems include adaptive cruise control, lane-assist, front-assist with cyclist and pedestrian detection, turn assist, side assist, rear cross-traffic alert and front and rear parking sensors.

Each Tavascan is covered by a five-year/unlimited km warranty, an eight-year/160,000km battery warranty and optional pre-paid servicing from $990 for three years.
