XPeng has revealed details of a forthcoming facelift to its G6 mid-size electric SUV in its Chinese home market.

More than just the nip and tuck it appears to be, the new G6 is said by the brand’s founder, He Xiaopeng, to be 34 per cent new underneath, with 81 updated features.

Chinese media is reporting that it will include an upgraded array of driver assist features, and spy shots also show a tweaked central touchscreen.

The G6 maintains its core shape, with a tweaked and more low-profile light bar running across its nose, and the badge moved to the top of the bonnet. It also features a new set of alloy wheels, a new 'XPENG' logo across its tailgate.

According to Chinese media, additional features include massage front seats, capacitive features for the steering wheel controls, an upgraded computer and suede-style headlining.

Dealer information leaked to Chinese media also suggests the new version may have an even lower starting price than the current car, with a circa-AU$4500 cut to the starting price in its home market.

Expect to learn full details of the G6 overhaul when the vehicle is fully revealed for the Chinese market shortly.

The pre-facelift G6 has only just arrived in customer hands in Australia, after a long launch campaign for the brand. The brand’s importer has an aggressive expansion strategy, which will next see its X9 people mover and G9 large SUV hit Australian shores.

Over in China, XPeng is also rapidly expanding its line-up as it vies to carve out a niche in an increasingly competitive market. A new model, the G7, will sit above the G6 but below the G9 in the brand’s line-up, and the brand has also recently launched an upgraded version of its P7 sedan as well as adding the Tesla Model 3-rivalling M03 to its line-up.

In Australia, XPeng recently announced it would revert to a 10-year warranty it offered as a launch promotion on the G6 before resetting to its usual five-year promise. It is matched by an extended 10-year battery warranty. It means XPeng joins a list of highly competitive (but often conditional) 10-year warranties now offered by Mitsubishi, Nissan, and MG.

Locally, the XPeng G6 starts from $54,800 for the standard range, stretching to $59,800 for the Long Range version. While its pricing was well-received at launch, it now has to compete with an upgraded Model Y (which arrives starting from $63,400), and keenly priced Chinese contemporaries, like the Leapmotor C10 (from $45,888) and Geely EX5 (said to start from the high-$40k bracket when pricing is announced later this year).

Stay tuned for more on the XPeng G6 facelift, including local timing.
