The Holden Astra RS-V is the United Nations of cars, with influences from all over the world to make a machine (hopefully) fit for all.
The RS-V is near the top of the new Astra range, powered by a 1.6-litre turbo four, with 137kW and a meaty 300Nm of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission was fitted to our car, but if you're keen, you can have a six-speed manual.
Rolling on 18-inch wheels, the Astra is a smooth looking car, with an almost coupe-like roofline. Ours also had the amazing (optional) 'IntelliLux' matrix LED headlights.
Inside is a lot of gear for the money, including a big 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, sat nav, leather trim and a properly comfortable set of front seats. The back seat was also pretty good, but misses out on vents and cupholders.

There is tons of safety gear, too, with six airbags, ABS, stability and traction controls, forward collision warning, low speed AEB, lane-keep assist and blind spot monitoring. Last but not least, there are three top-tether restraints and two ISOFIX points.
Nikki and I spent a week each at the wheel of the new Astra and both of us wondered if it's the car to take the fight to the Mazda3 and Hyundai i30. Australians love the Astra name, but will they love the new car behind it?
