The Sport is the entry point into the Mazda CX-9 range with a list price of $44,990 for the front-wheel drive and $48,990 for the all-wheel drive, it's the most affordable grade in the line-up.

Standard features include a seven-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android auto sat nav, six-speaker stereo, Bluetooth connectivity, push-button ignition, three-zone climate control, LED headlights, rear parking sensors, cloth seats and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The CX-9 scored the maximum five-star ANCAP rating when it was tested in 2016. The 2018 update added even more advanced safety tech and all grades now come with an impressive amount of advanced safety equipment including AEB (forward and rear), blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane keeping assistance, traffic sign recognition and adaptive cruise control with stop and go function.

All Mazda CX-9s come with a 2.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine which makes 170kW and 420Nm. With the six-speed automatic transmission Mazda says the CX-9 should consume 91 RON at 8.4L/100km in the front-wheel drive and 8.8L/100km in the all-wheel drive during combined driving conditions.

Laura Berry is a best-selling Australian author and journalist who has been reviewing cars for almost 20 years.  Much more of a Hot Wheels girl than a Matchbox one, she grew up in a family that would spend every Friday night sitting on a hill at the Speedway watching Sprintcars slide in the mud. The best part of this was being given money to buy stickers. She loved stickers… which then turned into a love of tattoos. Out of boredom, she learnt to drive at 14 on her parents’ bush property in what can only be described as a heavily modified Toyota LandCruiser.   At the age of 17 she was told she couldn’t have a V8 Holden ute by her mother, which led to Laura and her father laying in the driveway for three months building a six-cylinder ute with more horsepower than a V8.   Since then she’s only ever owned V8s, with a Ford Falcon XW and a Holden Monaro CV8 part of her collection over the years.  Laura has authored two books and worked as a journalist writing about science, cars, music, TV, cars, art, food, cars, finance, architecture, theatre, cars, film and cars. But, mainly cars.   A wife and parent, her current daily driver is a chopped 1951 Ford Tudor with a V8.
