The Subaru Forester Touring is the top-spec Forster, with the mid-size SUV available in petrol and hybrid options at this level.
The top-spec AWD Touring costs $50,990 in petrol and $55,990 as a hybrid. It scores a sunroof, digital driver display, leather-accented seats, a leather gearshifter, ventilated front seats and a 10-speaker Harman Kardon sound system joining the standard kit like an 11.6-inch multimedia touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, 18-inch alloy wheels, auto LED headlights, dual-zone climate, heated front seats and electric folding rear seats as well as a wireless phone charger.
There’s also electrically adjustable front seats, sat-nav, auto-dipping and folding door mirrors and a hands-free tailgate.

Under the bonnet is a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated flat-four ‘boxer’ engine for petrol versions that makes 136kW and 247Nm. Hybrids have the same type of engine with different valve controls and lower outputs, plus a 90kW electric motor that is placed before the transmission and sends electric power to all four wheels. Total outputs for the hybrids are 145kW and 276Nm.
Subaru claims the Forester drinks 7.9L of petrol (91RON min) per 100km of driving, with hybrids wearing a 6.2L/100km fuel consumption figure as claimed by Subaru.
A five-star ANCAP rating and nine airbags mean peace-of mind in case of the worst, but there’s also plenty of active safety tech including adaptive cruise, emergency lane-keep and centering with departure warnings, pre-collision braking, auto emergency steering, driver monitoring and a feature which slows the car to a safe stop if it detects the driver is unresponsive.
Subaru‘s five-year, unlimited kilometre warranty covers the Forester, and servicing intervals are every 15,000km or 12 months.
