A new BYD electric car has been revealed in China via filings with the country’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

The Sealion 5 EV, as it’s known in China, is going to be part of BYD’s Ocean Series. The brand sells a plug-in hybrid under the same name back home, though it is a size-class larger than the EV.

Measuring 4520mm long, 1880mm wide and 1720mm tall with 2712mm wheelbase, the five-seat Sealion 5 EV is set up to be a little longer and wider than the existing Atto 3, with a shorter wheelbase.

BYD has not officially released the car and there’s no word on if it is confirmed for Australia. As it stands, BYD sells the Atto 3 — from its Yuan series in China — alongside fellow Ocean series EVs, the Dolphin and Seal

The Chinese brand recently introduced its first plug-in hybrid into Australia, the Sealion 6, with the Shark 6 ute to follow imminently.

The Sealion 5’s details remain scarce, though it is expected to use the same ‘Blade’ lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery packs, presumably in two sizes offering likely in excess of 400km driving range.

With the ministry filings, there are two motor outputs listed: 140kW and 160kW. Aside from that, the only other revelation from CarNewsChina is that it will either feature 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels.

Pricing in China is expected to be the equivalent of A$24,000-A$30,500. That makes it a more premium product than the Atto 3 in its home and a potential rival for the Zeekr X, Hyundai Kona electric as well as the Volvo EX30

If the Sealion 5 EV is coming to Australia, we’d expect it to slot between the Atto 3 and incoming Sealion 7, with pricing from around $50,000 running as high as $65,000. Further details will be confirmed when the Sealion 5 EV is released in China.
