Mercedes-Benz has kicked off the new financial year with value-add special edition versions of its key small and medium hatch, sedan and SUV models claimed to add up to $4800 worth of extra features at no additional cost.

The A-Class, CLA, GLA and GLB models draw elements from existing Mercedes option packages, the unique ‘Manufaktur’ colour palette and the Mercedes-AMG equipment list.

First up, the compact A-Class hatch, locked in battle with fellow Germans like the Audi A3 and VW Golf, and the CLA four-door coupe, lining up against the likes of the evergreen BMW 3 Series and its own C-Class stablemate.

Special Edition versions of these two feature ‘Night Package’ design elements, specifically a high-gloss black finish on the tailpipe trims and side sill panels as well as 19-inch AMG (twin) five-spoke alloy wheels.

A panoramic sunroof is added to the A200 and CLA200 while the feature remains standard on the A 250 and CLA 250.

Inside, grey seatbelts are matched by grey contrast stitching on the seats, dashboard and door panels.

Similarly, Mercedes GLA and GLB models are in an arm-wrestle with Audi’s Q3 and Q5, BMW’s X1 and X3 as well as the likes of the Lexus NX and VW T-Roc.

To boost their appeal, Special Edition versions pick up the black Night Package highlights, with 20-inch AMG rims filling the wheel arches.

The Special Edition GLA cabin features ‘longitudinal-grain’ aluminium trim while the GLB swaps in ‘carbon-structure’ pieces.

At the same time, as part of this edition ‘Manufaktur Alpine Grey’ solid paint becomes available for the first time in the brand’s compact model line-up. And it’s offered with other Manufaktur solid and metallic paint options at no extra cost.

On sale now, Mercedes-Benz Australia confirms there is currently no limitation on number or time of availability for the Special Edition models.

As a small boy James often sat on a lounge with three shoes in front of him, a ruler between the cushions, and a circular drinks tray in his hands. He would then play ‘drivings’, happily heading to destinations unknown for hours on end. He’s since owned many cars, raced a few, and driven (literally) thousands of them at all points of the globe. He’s steered around and across Australia multiple times, spent time as an advanced driving instructor, and had the opportunity to experience rare and valuable classics here and overseas. His time in motoring journalism has included stints at national and international titles including Motor, Wheels and TopGear, and when asked to nominate a career highlight, James says interviewing industry legend Gordon Murray, in the paddock at the 1989 Australian Formula One Grand Prix was amazing, especially as Murray waived away a hovering Ayrton Senna to complete the conversation. As Deputy Editor, James manages everything from sub-editing to back-end content while creating written and video product reviews.
