Electric cars reached a tipping point during 2024 in many markets, but Australia is still behind other countries that are experiencing a slowdown.

This global slowdown combined with continued momentum in Australia is a potent combination, which is excellent news for new car buyers as a huge array of electric cars in all shapes, sizes, and price points will now arrive in 2025.

Not only will there be the arrival of long-delayed entries from some of the most recognisable brands, but there will be a collection of all-new entries as many Chinese manufacturers try their luck in Australia.

Nearly 30 new EVs are due in Australia before the end of next year, with no doubt even more to come.

Could one of the below be on your radar over the course of the year? Check out our comprehensive list to find out.

Best electric cars arriving in 2025

01. BYD Sealion 7 - Q1

BYD Sealion 7
BYD Sealion 7

BYD is on a roll and has a huge range of vehicles to import form China, but the Sealion 7 is the next Aussie bound model.

It has recently been spotted testing in Sydney, which adds weight to BYD's quarter 1 launch timing.

It is the Chinese giant's much needed answer to the Tesla Model Y and could supercharge its sales in Australia.

It is available in rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive layouts with range claimed to be more than 500km in China.

Expect prices to start in the low- to mid-$50,000 range to rival Tesla and other Chinese EVs.

02. Cupra Born VZ – Q1

Cupra Born VZ
Cupra Born VZ

The Cupra Born might be one of Australia’s most underrated little EVs, loading up warm-hatch thrills in a compact, hatch-sized package with a long range and keen pricing.

The Spanish upstart will refresh nearly its whole range in 2025, and as part of this update it will bring a hot-hatch version of the Born, the VZ.

This version upgrades power from 170kW/310Nm to 240kW/545Nm, allowing a 0-100km/h sprint time of 5.7 seconds.

03. Cupra Tavascan - Q1

The mid-size Tavascan electric SUV will join the Spanish brand's Born electric hatchback at the start of 2025.

A beefy battery delivers more than 550km of driving range and it's styling will turn heads in traffic.

Cupra hasn't revealed prices but it is expected be less than $70,000 (before on-road costs) when it arrives.

04. Deepal S07 — Q1

Deepal S07
Deepal S07

Chinese newcomer Deepal is dropping its S07 mid-size electric SUV on Aussie roads early next year.

It is priced very competitively at $53,900 (before on-road costs), and comes in a solo single motor, rear-wheel drive variant.

It has 160kW and 320Nm and a claimed driving range of up to 475km.

05. Genesis GV70 Electrified – Q1

Genesis GV70 Electrified
Genesis GV70 Electrified

Another underrated premium option, the Genesis GV70 is an example of a combustion car, which has been very successfully transformed into an EV.

This incoming model year update for 2025 will introduce some tweaks to its interior and exterior design, adding new wheels and screens. It will also introduce a sport pack, which will dial up the visual aggression, perhaps as a precursor to the Korean premium brand bringing its go-fast ‘Magma’ variants to our shores.

06. Hyundai Inster – Q1

After a long teaser campaign, Hyundai will launch its quaint fully electric city car in Australia in 2025. It should be a fairly unique offering in Australia, setting itself apart from other EVs thanks to its compact dimensions but with a surprisingly long driving range.

It could also be one of the most affordable new electric car in Australia when it arrives, with pricing suggested to be about the mid-$30,000 mark.

07. Kia EV6 — Q1

Kia EV6
Kia EV6

The Kia EV6 once looked like a radical departure from the mid-size SUV pack with its unusual hunkered-down shape. Compared to the rest of Kia’s EV range it no longer fits in with its comparatively old-school light fittings.

Expect this to be rectified in 2025 with the arrival of the sporty EV’s first facelift, which will bring with it a new face to sync it up with the larger EV9 and incoming smaller EV5 and EV3. As part of this upgrade, it will also receive a bigger battery, new screens and software, a new steering wheel and improved noise insulation.

08. Volkswagen ID.4 — Q1

Volkswagen ID.4
Volkswagen ID.4

Volkswagen's ID.4 is a twin to the Cupra Tavascan and has been hit with multiple delays pushing its arrival date back into 2025 — it was supposed to arrive in Q4 2024.

Volkswagen has said it is likely to be priced about the $60,000 mark to go head-on with new Chinese competition and the fast selling tesla Model Y.

09. Audi Q6 e-tron — early 2025

The upper mid-sized Q6 e-tron SUV introduces an entirely new platform, the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) for Audi, which was co-developed with Porsche and will also underpin the new Macan.

Planned to arrive in the first half of 2025, the Q6 e-tron will be available in Performance RWD or Quattro AWD versions, with a go-fast SQ6 also forming part of the range. It brings with it an all new design language, software and features for the German premium brand.

10. Audi Q4 e-tron — early 2025

Audi Q4 e-tron

Audi’s much anticipated Q4 mid-sizer, which shares its MEB underpinnings with the similarly anticipated Volkswagen ID.4 has been delayed once again, but it’s so the brand get its hands on an updated version which should improve its chances.

It will score an upgraded battery with 524km of WLTP-rated range and new suspension, although will keep its previously-confirmed price-point, starting at $84,900 for the base 45 rear-wheel drive version.

11. BYD Dolphin update — March/April

BYD Dolphin
BYD Dolphin

BYD is updating its Dolphin small hatchback, with the brand saying it will arrive in March/April.

It gets revised styling, including the deletion of the "Build Your Dreams" script badging on the back for the more subtle 'BYD" badging.

There isn't expected to be many major changes underneath the skin.

12. Kia EV3 – March/April

The Kia EV3 will serve as the brand’s compact electric SUV, roughly equivalent in size to the current Seltos combustion SUV. Unlike the larger EV6 and EV9, the EV3 will use a primarily front-wheel drive version of the brand’s capable e-GMP chassis, with all-wheel drive reserved for a performance focused GT variant.

The EV3 promises keen pricing (from roughly the early $50k region) paired with long driving range thanks to relatively large batteries. Buyers can expect a vehicle-to-load function and versatile interior layouts with an abundance of sustainable material choices.

13. Aion V — Q2

Aion V
Aion V

Chinese carmaker GAC, is launching its Aion electric car sub brand in Australia next year.

The first vehicle in its line-up will be the V electric SUV.

Details are scarce but in China there are multiple variants with batteries ranging from 62kWh to 90kWh in capacity.

All come with a single motor sending 150kW or 165kW and 240Nm to the front wheels.

Expect it to be sharply priced, when it arrives before the middle of the year.

14. Hyundai Ioniq 9 — Q2

Hyundai Ioniq 9
Hyundai Ioniq 9

At the larger end of the size-spectrum, Hyundai will finally expand on its Ioniq range with its largest model yet, the Ioniq 9.

It is Hyundai’s take on the well-received Kia EV9. The Ioniq 9 will also be a large three-row SUV.

It has a big range, big dimensions and an even bigger battery, but don’t expect it to be a price-leader.

15. MG S5 EV — Q2

MG S5 EV
MG S5 EV

The MG S5 is the replacement for the affordable MG ZS EV.

The new S5 has nothing to do with the petrol and hybrid powered ZS, though. It is based on the same platform as the excellent MG4 hatchback.

MG hasn't narrowed down timing outside of it will be here next year.

In China it has a range of battery sizes, which are likely to deliver between 340km and 430km in Australia. All are fitted with a single rear mounted motor in a variety of tunes.

16. Skoda Elroq — Q2

Skoda Elroq
Skoda Elroq

Skoda's second electric car is just around the corner.

It is due to arrive in Australia in the second half of the year and shares its underpinnings with the Cupra Born, Audi Q4 e-tron and Volkswagen ID.4.

It will be available with a variety of battery and motor combinations, but no Australian range details are available just yet.

17. Volkswagen ID.Buzz GTX – Q2

Following the launch of the ID.Buzz Cargo and regular passenger versions in 2024, the somewhat unique go-fast GTX will arrive in the second quarter of 2025.

Adding a second motor on the front axle for boosted power outputs, the GTX also scores new tyres, sporty suspension and additional driving modes.

18. Audi e-tron GT — H1

The e-tron GT will receive a major model year upgrade in 2025. The new version is split into three variants, the base version will now be called the S, with the RS sitting in the middle and the RS Performance taking its place at the top of the range.

There’s a larger battery delivering a longer range, new active suspension and carbon highlights available.

19. Geely EX5 – H1

Geely EX5
Geely EX5

For the longest time, the industry’s worst-kept secret was Chinese giant Geely setting up shop for an Australian launch.

The brand, which owns Volvo, Polestar, Lotus and Zeekr, will hit the Australian market with a mainstream mid-size electric SUV dubbed the EX5 to rival the Tesla Model Y, Kia EV5 and more.

20. Mercedes-Benz G 580e – H1

Mercedes-Benz G 580e
Mercedes-Benz G 580e

Yep, Mercedes will electrify its iconic Gelandewagen in 2025 to perhaps ironically sit alongside a new version equipped with a V8 engine.

Few details are available for its Australian launch, but expect the same sort of excess as the G63 V8 has always embodied. The brand has confirmed motor outputs of 432kW/1164Nm as well as the capability to turn on the spot (Mercedes calls this a G-Turn, but others call it a Tank Turn).

21. Volvo EX90 — H1

The Volvo EX90 was meant to launch in 2024, but significant issues with software in overseas markets has delayed its arrival until the first half of 2025.

The large seven-seat electric SUV will duke it out with the Kia EV9 (and probably the Hyundai Ioniq 9) as part of an electric renewal of Volvo’s core line-up, and it will add to a limited field of seven-seat electric options for the time being.

Make no mistake though, this is still a premium SUV, aiming to start north of $130,000 in Australia with luxurious cabin appointments and sharing its SPA2 platform with the more performance-oriented Polestar 3.

22. Audi A6 e-tron — mid 2025

Audi A6 e-tron
Audi A6 e-tron

A lower-riding alternative to the Q6, the A6 will be the second car to ride on the PPE platform to rival the Mercedes-Benz EQE. It will also feature base rear-wheel drive or more performance-oriented all-wheel drive options, with what the brand is claiming to be ‘best-in-class’ driving range (estimated at 610km in international markets for the rear-wheel drive version).

Its 800-volt architecture allows charging at up to 270kW for charge times as low as 22 minutes. The S6 will offer a 0-100km/h sprint time of just 3.9 seconds.

23. Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 GTX

Standard versions of the Volkswagen ID.4, after significant delays, will finally land in Australia before the end of 2024. The warmed-up GTX versions, which have all-wheel drive and power outputs of 250kW/679Nm alongside more aggressive styling will arrive later in 2025.

They’ll bolster VW’s electric car offensive, as the brand looks to carve out a niche for itself against an increasing array of Chinese rivals.

24. Smart #5 – H2

Smart #5
Smart #5

Smart, once the city-car arm of Mercedes-Benz, now an EV-only joint venture with Geely, has re-launched itself in Australia in 2024 with the #1 and #3 small SUVs.

The #5, set to arrive around the middle of next year, is a complete departure for the brand, a rugged-looking mid-size SUV with what the brand says is “true off-road capability” as well as a punchy dual motor drivetrain and a huge battery pack designed to grant it a long driving range. It’s got plenty of accessories and party tricks, too, like a built-in portable projector for all your camping or event needs.

25. Alfa Romeo Junior – H2

The hopes and dreams of Alfa Romeo no doubt rest on the diminutive shoulders of its smallest-yet SUV, the Junior (which was once called the Milano, but got in trouble for that because it’s actually built in Poland).

Regardless, the Junior will launch in both hybrid and fully electric forms, with the latter offering two drivetrain options, either a 116kW ‘Elettrica’ or a 180kW ‘Veloce’

The small SUV shares much of its tech underpinnings with the Peugeot e-2008, including its 54kWh battery pack, which allows it around 410km of driving range.

26. Nissan Ariya — H2

Nissan Ariya
Nissan Ariya

The Nissan Ariya has been on the market internationally since 2022, but the mid-size SUV has so far been ruled out for an Australian launch, firstly due to supply issues, and more recently due to issues with ADR compliance.

CarsGuide understands the Ariya’s fate in Australia will change imminently though, with a mid-cycle update earmarked for an Australian launch in the second half of 2025 as Nissan aims to stay in the EV game. Its trailblazing but under appreciated Leaf has now stopped production with a new-generation vehicle replacing it imminently, so the Ariya will have to carry Nissan’s electric hopes in the interim.

27. IM Motors L6 and LS6 — 2025

IM Motors L6
IM Motors L6

MG will import its stablemate, IM Motors, new electric L6 sedan and LS6 SUV next year. The vehicles are expected to wear MG badges.

They bring groundbreaking tech with advanced batteries capable of 800km of driving range and plenty of luxury kit.

More details will be revealed in 2025.

28. Polestar 5 — 2025

Polestar 5
Polestar 5

Polestar’s next model to follow on from the 3 large SUV and 4 mid-size SUV is the 5 grand tourer.

An all-electric rival to the likes of the Porsche Taycan, the Polestar 5 promises high specifications and high performance, with an 800-volt battery and big power, and likely a price-tag exceeding $200,000 as Polestar’s premium plans come to fruition.

29. Zeekr 7X – 2025

Zeekr 7X
Zeekr 7X

Zeekr, Geely’s premium arm and a newcomer to the Australian market, will follow up its X small SUV and 009 people mover with its 7X mid-sizer in 2025.

The 7X shares its underpinnings with the existing 007 sedan offered in China, and it promises high performance to go with its premium positioning. We expect to see 475kW from its most powerful dual-motor layout if it matches its sedan relation, and around 600km of driving range.
